The Department of Immigration and Border Protection may soon introduce a computer system that will automatically determine whether a foreign national is permitted to live or visit Australia. This once-in-a-generation overhaul of the country’s visa processing system will be run by a private company.
Under the new arrangements, the Immigration Department would still directly handle applications for refugee status and diplomatic visas and be responsible for security checks.
